The Burma Army Burns More Villages it Cannot Control in Northern Burma, July – September 2023
11 November 2023
Kachin, Northern Shan, Sagaing, Mandalay Regions, Burma
The Burma Army continued its offensives into Northern Burma and attacks on civilian areas to prevent the loss of key logistical and economic corridors. The Burma Army used ground attacks, artillery, mortars, airstrikes, and naval reinforcement to conduct “clearance” operations and destroy villages along these notable land and naval routes. The three most contested areas during this period include the logistical routes from Mandalay to Myitkyina, the trade highway from Lashio to Muse that connects Burma to China, and the highly lucrative Hpakant jade mine.
Conflict activity along the Mandalay-Myitkyina corridors accounted for half of the overall reported activity as the Burma Army struggled to secure its land routes into Kachin and conduct offensive operations. The Burma Army and associated proxy forces burned or destroyed 11 villages along the Irrawaddy River in the midst of fighting the with Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Kachin People’s Defense Forces (KPDF), and Arakan Army (AA). All these villages are located in relative proximity in Shwegu and Katha townships and include the villages of Indinyent, Hting Ga, Bo Kung, Chawng Wa, Inn Dayan, Yawa Ta Ya, Chyauk Htung Gyi, Zin Bung, Mya Le, Ban Bwe Kung, and Moe Sit. Light Infantry Division (88) particularly had an active role in the village destruction along this corridor and also played a key part in the offensive that destroyed 11 villages in the March-May hot season offensive of this year.
The destruction of villages along the Irrawaddy is likely connected to the attacks on Burma Army river transport boats by the KIA and KPDF. Resistance forces have significantly attritted and blocked the Burma Army moving along the NH31 and NH43 highways to Bhamo and Myitkyina through the use of ambushes and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks. It appears the Burma Army has shifted strategy to prioritize river transport for troops and supplies, particularly during the rainy season when air and ground transport are typically not as reliable.
Destroyed home after Light Infantry Division 88 burned Indinyent Village.
A quarter of the conflict activity during this period in Northern Burma occurred along the Lashio-Muse NH3 Highway. This corridor is frequently the target of Burma Army artillery, mortar, and air strikes on resistance forces. The NH3 highway is one of only four main trade routes that connect Burma to China and serves as a major logistical artery for the Burma Army into Northern Shan State. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) have joined the KIA and KPDF in defending these areas from Burma Army ground attacks and they have all degraded the Burma Army’s freedom to move troops and supplies.
The Burma Army regularly responds to resistance attacks through the use of torture and extrajudicial killings. In one example, on 31 July in Muse Township, locals found the charred bodies of two men, reportedly abducted and tortured by the Burma Army, who were found at the grave of another man killed by the Burma military.
Hpakant jade mine conflict activity remains consistent as the Burma Army seeks to maintain its main mining revenue stream. The Hpakant jade industry supplies the military regime with billions of dollars annually since it is the largest jade mine in the world. Burma Army control over these jade mines continues to be contested, as the KIA seized Katsen Bum Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 119 Outpost on August 7th. The Burma Army generally limits air strikes in this area, possibly to prevent damage to mining infrastructure and disruption to mining operations.
The Burma Army continues to conduct retaliatory attacks on civilians as it loses its ability to secure its outposts and key lines of transport. For example, Burma Army soldiers from IB 76 executed a prisoner of war at Yuma Village on August 16th. In another instance, the Burma Army seized 23 civilians over three separate events—12 civilians were released but one civilian was beaten to death, likely because the Burma Army either suspected the civilians of having ties to the resistance or it was punishing the villagers for resistance attacks on Burma Army.
The Burma Army has been losing ground and route access in Northern Burma since the coup, albeit at a gradual pace. The Burma Army will likely prioritize keeping its logistical lines open with strategic combat divisions such as the Light Infantry Divisions and as well as artillery strikes and airstrikes. Nevertheless, the Burma Army is fighting a losing battle, and will probably increase the scale and severity of attacks on civilians and villages as it suffers more battlefield setbacks and loses control in the region.
Thank you all for praying for the people of Burma. We pray that the hearts of the dictators in the military will change and if they don’t, that they will fail and that our friends can survive and thrive.
