On October 9, 2023, at 11:31pm, two bombs launched by the Burma Army hit Munglai Hkyet Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp immediately north of Laiza in Waingmaw Township, Kachin State, leaving 29 IDP civilians dead and 57 others wounded while destroying many buildings and houses. Among the dead are women, and children under 16 years of age. The destroyed buildings include an IDP nursery school, IDP middle school, and a Lisu church. The injured are being treated at the Laiza Public Hospital and there was a mass funeral held for the deceased victims on October 10th.

Our FBR team on the ground assisted the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and local authorities with investigation and documentation of the attack and will continue to provide assistance. It is still unknown whether this attack was the result of artillery fire or bombs from combat jets. Please pray in solidarity with us for the people of Kachin and of Burma as they endure these heinous and senseless Burma Army attacks on their territories.
