WEEKLY BURMA SUMMARY

Rangers and resistance soldiers evacuate IDPs from east Phekhon Township.

Ranger Teams Work to Provide Aid Amid Increased Conflict

In early September, the Burma Army shelled villages in Kler Lwe Htoo District, killing one civilian and wounding others, and fought Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and People’s Defense Force (PDF) forces daily around Myet Ye with air and drone strikes. Rangers provided frontline medical care in Doo Pla Ya District, funded education for 116 IDP students in Loikaw District, and relocated 134 IDPs in east Phekhon after Burma Army pressure and expulsions.

NORTHERN KAREN STATE

In Kler Lwe Htoo District, the Burma Army fired mortars into Yin Le and Nge Twe Sok villages, and fought KNLA and PDF soldiers in an attempt to regain the road between Mone and Ler Doh townships as well as Myet Ye Village. Meanwhile, in Hsaw Hti Township, Rangers provided medical and dental aid to villagers.

The Burma Army fired a 120mm mortar into Yin Le Village (Mone Township) from Natha Gwein Village (Mone Township) at 1730 hours on Sep. 2, killing one man, Saw Paw Lah Moo, age 37. One other villager was wounded, and a cow was wounded in the shelling. The next day, at 0930 hours, the Burma Army fired two 81mm mortars into Nge Twe Sok Village (Mone Township) injuring one woman from the Hseit Gyi (Mone Township)

Between 150 and 180 Burma Army soldiers are at Myet Ye Village (Mone Township). Between Aug. 31 and Sep. 3, these soldiers have fought KNLA and PDF soldiers every day to regain control over the road between Mone and Ler Doh townships. Again, on Sep. 6, these Burma Army soldiers fought with the KNLA at Myet Ye Village. Burma Army jets dropped three bombs, and a Burma Army bomb dropped by a drone killed a KNLA soldier.

Rangers provided medical and dental care for villagers in Kto Kay Pu, Klaw Tho Kee, and Htee Kay Law villages (Hsaw Hti Township) between Sep. 2 and 6.

CENTRAL KAREN STATE

Above: Rangers provide care for two soldiers with long-term illnesses.

In Doo Pla Ya District, Rangers responded to urgent front-line medical needs during a three-day battle as the Burma Army fired artillery and mortars into Htee Mu Hta Village and surrounding areas. In response, Rangers, in conjunction with the Cobra Column Strategic Medical Unit, coordinated emergency evacuation and medical treatment for 12 wounded soldiers.

Between Sep. 2 and 4, in Thin Gyan Noi Naung, Doo Pla Ya District, Rangers responded to heavy fighting and treated multiple gunshot, shrapnel, and mortar wounds.

On Sep. 2 at 0600 hours, the Burma Army fired 120mm and 122mm artillery into Htee Mu Hta Village, wounding several villagers. Two days later, on Sep. 4, Rangers provided medical care to injured soldiers. The most seriously wounded were evacuated to Mae Sot Hospital for advanced treatment.

On Sep. 5, 36 Rangers graduated from the Ranger First Responder Course while seven completed the Chaplain Training Program. Then, on Sep. 8, in Mawtu Village, Rangers provided medical treatment to two soldiers suffering from long-term illnesses.

KARENNI STATE

Students smile after receiving a school fee donation in Elephant IDP camp.

In Elephant IDP Camp, Loikaw Township, Loikaw District, Rangers provided 6.96 million kyats (about $3,300USD) to support the educational needs of 116 students on Sep. 1. This initiative was driven by a tragic incident in June, when a 12-year-old student in Elephant IDP camp took her own life because her parents could not afford her school fees. Deeply moved by this heartbreaking event, Rangers decided to take action and contribute to help other students continue their education.

SOUTHERN SHAN STATE

Rangers and resistance soldiers evacuate IDPs from east Phekhon Township.

On Aug. 31, Burma military forces pressured IDPs in east Phekhon Township to return to their home villages ahead of the forthcoming election. They also expelled IDPs from Karenni, claiming their presence there was illegal. In response, Rangers, along with Karenni National Defense Force (KNDF), PDF and Karenni Army (KA), relocated 134 IDPs and villagers from Si Mee Lot, Nan Pa Lone and Pain Chit villages to an IDP camp.
