Aung San Suu Kyi and Cinema for Peace ask you to support the release of Zarganar
and the removal of a work ban on U Kyaw Thu in Burma

At the 10th Cinema for Peace Gala AUNG SAN SUU KYI called on the film community
to help to free and support fellow artists and filmmakers in Burma by signing
this petition.
Burma’s most popular comedian ZARGANAR has received a prison sentence of 59
years which later was reduced to 35 years.Zarganar who since more than 20 years
is one of the most active critics against the government already received punishment
in the past and was imprisoned and tortured several times. In 2008 he was convicted
for talking openly to foreign media against the government’s failure to aid
the victims of Cyclone Nargis.
The Burmese actor and Myanmar Academy Award winner U KYAW THU suffers a similar
fate. Though not imprisoned at the moment he is charged with a strict ban on
working as an actor and director for opposing state censorship. Freedom of speech
is tightly restrained in Burma: Much like Zarganar and U Kyaw Thu, countless
artists are under arrest or prevented from working in their craft, because they
engaged in humanitarian activities or criticised the government. Performers
and artists are often at the front line in the fight for freedom of expression.
We, the undersigned artists, filmmakers and members of civil society call for
creative freedom in Burma, the immediate removal of work bans for artists like
U Kyaw Thu and the immediate release of the comedian Zarganar who is currently
imprisoned for his humanitarian work and political views. Thank you!
